Stairlift Grants

Information On Grants For Stairlifts

If you are considering a stairlift, and you are on a low income, you may want to see if you are eligible for a Disabled Facilities Grant. These are grants available from your local council, for people on a low income and who may otherwise struggle to afford the costs of adapting a property. Currently they are available up to a maximum of £30,000 for the provision of disabled adaptations.

Who can apply to get a Disabled Facilities Grant?

You can apply for a Disabled Facilities Grant if:
1) You, or someone living in your property, is disabled (your council will use an Occupational Therapist to assess your level of need), and
2) You, or the person you are applying on behalf of, are either the home owner or tenant of the property, and
3) You can certify that you, or the person you are applying for, intend to occupy the property as your main residence for a period of five years (the current duration of the grant)

If you are a disabled tenant then your landlord can apply on your behalf provided you intend to occupy the property for the grant period.

How long will I have to wait for a decision on my disabled facilities grant application?

Councils are bound to giving a decision within 6 months so if you haven’t heard within this time you should contact your council immediately.

What if my application is refused? If your application is refused or you feel the amount is too small then there is an appeal process that you can follow.

How long will I have to wait to recieve my grant?

Most councils will specify a date of payment, this should be no longer than 12 months after your initial application - PLEASE BE AWARE THAT A DISABLED FACILITIES GRANT WILL NEVER BE AWARDED FOR WORK ALREADY COMPLETED!

If you need a stairlift urgently then the Disabled facilities grant may be the wrong route for you. Some people cannot possibly wait for this length of time as they are struggling with the stairs or are in hospital and the Occupational Therapist insist a stairlift is purchased before they are allowed to return home, to ensure the safety of the user.

How much Disabled Facilities Grant can you can get?

The amount of grant paid is based on a financial assessment (means test) which will take into account your average weekly income - if you have a partner this will be your joint income - in relation to your average weekly outgoings. The means test will take into account savings above £6,000. Depending on the outcome of the means test the amount of financial assistance offered can vary from 0 to 100 per cent of the cost of the disabled adaptation. There is no means testing for families of disabled children under 19.

As well as stairlifts the disabled facilities grants can be used for other disabled adaptations:

1) widening doors and installing ramps for easy access to and from the property
2) specially adapt rooms (bathrooms/toilets etc) to make them safe
3) installing downstairs bathroom
4) adapting heating and lighting controls
5) improve access and movement around your home

An occupational therapist will assess your circumstances/needs and will recommend the best type of adaptation(s) for you.
